Monitoring the reforestation project in Armenia: young trees continue to grow

Armenia, Dzoraglukh, October 2025

Following the planting phase completed in 2023, the reforestation project supported by A Tree for Youand implemented with local partner SHEN is now continuing with monitoring and maintenance activities. These vital steps ensure the young trees take good root, as well as the long-term sustainability of the project.

A  plantation now well established

This initiative aims to restore degraded areas in the Dzoraglukh region of Armenia, where firewood harvesting for energy needs has weakened local ecosystems. Thanks to your support, 20,800 trees have been planted across several hectares. The species selected – oaks, pines, mountain maples, birches, oriental apple trees and Caucasian pear trees – have beenchosen for their ecological complementarity and their adaptation to local conditions.

This diversity plays a part in reconstituting a resilient natural forest, contributing to biodiversity conservation and soil protection.

Regular monitoring actions

Since the planting phase ended, local teams have been closely monitoring the young trees. Training, pruning, maintenance, and supervision activities took place throughout 2024. Field visits recorded a survival rate of around 80%, a satisfactory result given the climatic conditions. Trees that failed to survive have been replaced during spring 2025.

A joint audit by A Tree for You and SHEN also confirmed compliance of the activities undertaken and the quality of the project’s technical management.

A lasting local impact

Beyond reforestation, the project is helping involve the local community in sustainable management of their natural resources. Beneficiaries actively take part in the monitoring work and develop new skills in silviculture and environmental protection. In the long term, the restored forest will help reduce soil erosion, support water regulation, and restore an ecological balance for the benefit of both local wildlife and vegetation.

Looking ahead

Partners are continuing to work together to consolidate this first phase and prepare the next stages of the programme, including expanding activities to new sites in the Lori region. These efforts are fully aligned with A Tree for You’s mission: supporting reforestation projects that deliver positive environmental, social, and economic impacts.

A heartfelt thank you.

A Tree for You and SHEN would like to thank you all for your contribution to the success of this project. Thanks to your commitment, the young trees planted in Armenia are now growing well and playing an active role in the long-term restoration of local ecosystems.
