Tena, Ecuador, February 2022
Thanks to you all, 5,000 trees were planted in the Tena canton between 2019 and 2020. A total of 15 timber species, all of which are endangered and almost non-existent in the area, were selected for reforestation.
Throughout the three years of the project, the local team provided support for the 18 beneficiaries of the plantations. All the plantation plots were visited three times to ensure good monitoring and exchanges with the beneficiaries. These exchanges were an opportunity to train the farmers in plot maintenance, shade management, and first pruning the young trees. Overall, monitoring of the plantations took place in a good spirit and the farmers were proud to present their young trees that have already reached a significant size!
The results of these plantations are good – with a tree survival rate of 81% for all the plots planted. This result exceeds the project’s objective of an 80% survival rate. The plantations are now mature and mortality rates have stabilised. The trees are large enough to avoid being smothered by weeds, so their survival is guaranteed, barring extreme weather events.
Final monitoring will be carried out in February 2022 to obtain the final results and find out if the project objective of 4,000 perennial trees has been reached!
So we have now 4,050 trees that are growing well! This project is a success, and the beneficiaries are delighted!
