Wegscheid: planting to rescue a weakened forest

Municipal forest of Wegscheid, Alsace, France, August 2025

In the communal forest of Wegscheid, some plots are made up mainly of fir and spruce stands. Since 2018, these species have been suffering from drought and repeated bark beetle attacks. The aim of the project is to replace the diseased spruces in Wegscheid forest with a greater diversity of species more resilient to climate change. An important educational component has also been included, through the active involvement of local schoolchildren.

Since the project launch in 2021, more than 300 children from nearby schools have taken part in the activities. Guided by foresters from the Office national des forêts (ONF, French National Forestry Board), they have learned how to plant and protect trees.

The project began with a crucial phase of soil preparation to ensure the best possible conditions for the young trees to thrive. Planting soon followed, helped by schoolchildren, volunteers, hunters, and foresters, all united by the same goal: to bring the forest back to life. Educational workshops for children were also organised in classrooms to explain the role of forests and why preserving them is so vital.

In 2024 and 2025, reforestation continued with the planting of new species, bringing the total to 8,000 trees of 17 different species. Stakes and other measures to protect against wildlife were installed to safeguard the survival of the young saplings. Children were once again invited to take part, discovering the richness of forestry work and importance of every action taken in nature.

This initiative is both ecological and human orientated. It has helped to restore a threatened natural area while engaging younger generations in a hands-on, meaningful project. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for your confidence and commitment. Thanks to you, this project has planted trees and much more besides: it has sown hope and laid down strong roots for the future.

The next article will focus on monitoring the trees planted. A crucial stage since climate change continues to weaken the forests of France.
